MS Dhoni, also known as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand). His father worked in junior management positions and his mother was a housewife.
Dhoni's talent for sports was evident from a young age. He initially excelled in football and badminton but later switched to cricket. He started playing cricket for a local club and was selected for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-16 Championship.
Dhoni worked as a Travelling Ticket Examiner for a few years before focusing on cricket full-time. In domestic cricket, he played for Bihar and then for the Jharkhand Cricket team. His performance in the 2002-03 season included several half-centuries.
Dhoni made his international debut in 2004 and quickly established himself as a talented batsman. Within a year he joined the India Test team and scored a century against Pakistan.
Despite his inexperience, Dhoni took over the captaincy of the one-day side in 2007 and led India to the Twenty20 (T20) world title. Under his leadership, India achieved several series wins and moved to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings for the first time in December 2009.
Dhoni was honored with several awards for his play, including the ICC One Day International Player of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009. In the 2011 one-day World Cup, Dhoni’s innings of 91 not out led India to victory over Sri Lanka in the final.
Dhoni stopped serving as India’s captain in 2017 and retired from international competition three years later.
