Every year on July 26th, India celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas to honor the victory of the Indian Armed Forces over Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999. The conflict ended with the successful expulsion of Pakistani forces from their occupied positions in the Northern Kargil District of Ladakh.
The Kargil War was an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place in the Kargil district of Kashmir and elsewhere along the Line of Control (LOC) in 1999. The conflict arose due to Pakistan’s infiltration into Indian-controlled territory. The Indian Army, supported by the Indian Air Force, eventually regained control of the territory. The war resulted in hundreds of casualties on both sides and strained relations between the two countries.
The Kargil War is of great importance to India and its military. It demonstrated to the world that India has the power to defend its territorial sovereignty. The entire nation united to support the security forces during the war. Many brave soldiers gave their lives to protect India’s sovereignty and integrity, fighting under extremely difficult conditions and ultimately emerging victorious.
On Kargil Vijay Diwas, events are held throughout the country to recognize the contributions of the Indian Armed Forces. In New Delhi, the Prime Minister of India pays tribute to fallen soldiers at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate.
